In 1970, a young Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, Brad Whitford and Joey Kramer formed the rock band Aerosmith. The band formed in Boston, Massachusetts, although none of Aerosmith is actually from Boston.
Toys in the Attic, the 1975 release by Aerosmith, catapulted them to international super stardom. With a perfect combination of heavy metal, punk and glam rock Toys in the Attic was an immediate success. Opening with repeating bass riffs Sweet Emotions became the first Top 40 hit for Aerosmith. With the success of Sweet Emotions, Aerosmith went on to re-release Dream On, a track from their self-titled debut album as well as another new song from Toys in the Attic titled, Walk This Way. The whirlwind success of this album was unprecedented, causing the bands previously released albums to re-chart. The next album in 1976, Rocks quickly went platinum as well, and it too featured two radio tracks including Last Child. The release of these back to back albums put Aerosmith on the map and guaranteed them the title of greatest band ever.
Throughout the 1970s, Aerosmith continued to tour, they released a few more studio albums and even starred in the film adaptation of Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. Unfortunately after the success of Rocks, no success was to be had by the members of Aerosmith. By the end of the 1970s Aerosmith was succumbing to the same pressures as many whove walked their path; a hectic touring schedule and unlimited access to drugs. Eventually, Joe Perry quit the band, followed soon by Brad Whitford, and was replaced by Jimmy Crespo and Rick Dufay. The on-again off-again relationship Aerosmith was having with success seemed to be on again with the release of their colossal-selling Greatest Hits Album. But just a year later, they were down again following the utter failure of Rock in a Hard Place.
Things began looking up for Aerosmith in 1985; Joe Perry and Brad Whitford reunited with the band and they headed to the studio to record Done with Mirrors. Although it received more success than any other album since the 1970s, the album did not produce a hit single for Aerosmith. The next wave of success experienced by the band came in the form of Run D.M.C.s hybrid of hip hop and rock & roll, Walk This Way. Many consider this the beginning of the Aerosmith comeback.
In 1987, Aerosmith released Permanent Vacation which gave them their first success since Toys in the Attic. With unforgettable classics like Dude (looks like a lady), Rag Doll and Angel making it to the Top 20, the successes of Aerosmith looked like they would outweigh the failures. But the album that truly earned Aerosmith comeback status was Pump which featured the socially mature Janies Got a Gun. In the 1990s Aerosmith received a jolt from the MTV generation with the release of Get a Grip and the music videos featuring movie starlet Alicia Silverstone and Tylers daughter, Liv. But success came yet again for Aerosmith in 1998, this time in the form of a number 1 album, the rock ballad I dont Want to Miss a Thing from the film Armageddon. |
